An Introduction to ebay online auctions

Ebay.com is the largest of all the online auction sites, with over millions of registered users.

The mega auction site ebay has an average of 16 million items listed for auction at any particular moment, spread across more than 27,000 categories.   In 2002, eBay members were responsible for more than 14.87 billion dollars worth of gross sales.

That's a lot of pez dispensers and comic books- Just two of those 27,000 different categories, of course!

Now that ebay has become so HUGE, it may feel like your listing is a little lost in the shuffle... Read on, and we'll share tips on how to make your auction stand out from the rest, without breaking the bank!

How was ebay created?

Ebay was created in 1995 by Pierre Omidyar.  The current story is that his fiancée at the time was a collector of Pez dispensers, who wanted a place online where she could trade with other fans of this little plastic toy. Pierre wanted to give her an outlet for this, and thus, ebay was born!

Well, whether or not this is the actual way ebay started, one thing is true- in 1995, E-commerce suddenly turned a corner, and the C2C (consumer to consumer) business model had found a whole new audience on the internet.  It wasn't long before the first radio & TV commercials were aired promoting merchandise in the next Star Wars movie... ebay was suddenly a household word being used by people everywhere.
